To be happy, we need to get something and give something.
When they say, you should be happy on your own, you should not need someone else to make you happy, they ignore reality.
If you are starving, it is something from outside, food, would make you happy.
The same goes if you are constipated, something has to come out to make you happy.
For real happiness, you need something from outside to fill a need, and something from inside to come out.
Love, care, serving, etc, something must come out of your heart, compassion, giving etc.
You need both, to get and to give, in order to be really happy. One without the other will always leave you wondering what is wrong and missing, and you will blame the wrong thing as the source.
That is simply nature, the nature of the human being, physical, emotional, spiritual, all three have the same requirements for happiness and satisfaction, fulling their design.
The idea of loving yourself and focusing on a selfish or isolated life as if you could fulfil your needs on your own is simply not realistic and does not work, other than for brief moments of self delusion.
Physically, the need of another person is obvious, emotionally, we need someone to love and feel loved by, not just a pet who loves anyone who feeds it.
Spiritually we need a god to serve who gives us a special task and to feel loved by and cared for by that being, even if it is all in your imagination. This is the principle that religion was created with to hook the masses.
The greatest joy is the joy of giving. Contemplate times when you gave selflessly to a child, to someone, and got nothing in return, did that not make you very happy?
You did that on your own, without needing anyone, or so it appears. But you did need someone to give to. They gave you their existence.
Nothing in this world is isolated and without needing someone or something else for it to exist. Accept that fact and open your heart to knowing that a life without meaning, without connection, even if the connection is brief, is not a fulfilling life.
Guard yourself less, open yourself more, know that you are an infinite being beyond a limited human, and that may help you come to know the truth about yourself.
